ISA Level I Fellow
- Ian Richardson, CEO, USAF Pararescuemen
My experience in the ISA cohort opened my eyes to the vast amount of DoD resources available for start-up level companies working on military-related technologies. I had known about SBIR, and I thought that was the end of it, but it is only scratching the surface. It also became clear to me that there is a very real need for military scientific advisors in the start-up space.
Biomedical Client
- James Hatlan, President and CEO, Sonivate Medical, Inc.
Dr. Hanson was instrumental in Sonivate Medical receiving $2.5 million in funding from the US Army to develop an ultrasound system focused on emergency medicine including the forward deployment. He guided us through the whole proposal process and especially ensured that we included the Training Development and the Assessments for the medics. As it turned out, the Assessments were vital documents in our 510k submission to the FDA to establish a predicate product. Eric’s sections in the proposal received Sonivate’s highest ratings. Thanks to Dr. Hanson, and most recently the FDA clearance, we are now well on our way to offer this needed product to our military and emergency medicine worldwide.
- Lillian Chiang, Evrys Bio
At Evrys Bio, we are developing broad-spectrum antivirals that engage the patient’s own immunity to defend against viral infection. Our pipeline has therapeutic utility in multiple areas of significant unmet medical need. Dr. Hanson helped Evrys to obtain non-dilutive funding for application of our technology to medical countermeasures. He identified many unique funding opportunities and opened doors to build business relationships with Department of Defense (DoD) researchers and DoD components personnel, such as the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). His efforts have helped us to secure significant funding, including a multi-million dollar contract sponsored by DTRA. Eric is a pleasure to work with and I have recommended his services to other biopharma entities. He has been a member of Evrys Bio’s Scientific Advisory Board since 2017.
Level I Fellow, DoD SkillBridge
Patrick Nanson, Navy Veteran
In just a few months the ISA Level I Foundations course prepared me to provide value to multiple medical start-ups seeking DoD grant funding. The classwork, group discussions, and ISA templates provide an excellent understanding of how to prepare a successful grant application. More importantly, I feel confident that Dr. Hanson and the ISA Community are there to support me with expert advice at every turn.

Jonathan Monti, Army Veteran
A well-designed foundational course that greatly enriched my knowledge of non-dilutive funding procurement, and the vital importance of having someone with military experience/expertise on teams looking to commercialize dual-use biotechnologies. Not only is the ISA’s foundation course the only one of its kind, but the knowledge and connections it offers are invaluable for anyone navigating the military research and dual-use biotechnology realms.
Level I Fellow
Daniel McMahon, MD, Navy Veteran
The ISA Level 1 Foundations Course really opened my eyes to a vast amount of non-dilutive funding sources available through NIH, DoD, and other opportunities to help the med-tech and life sciences industry innovate and develop dual-use technology that serves the civilian and military sectors both domestically and abroad.
