About the Training Program

Who

For Active Duty, military Veterans, and military spouses with a background or training in health, biotech, or life sciences who want to continue to serve and contribute to mission completion within the health industry.

What

The Level I Foundations Course is an online 3-month course consisting of 12 asynchronous weekly modules, weekly group discussions, and case studies. This training will prepare Fellows to serve in roles on Virtual Scientific Advisory Teams.

When

The ISA Level I Foundation Course is offered 3 times per year, starting on the first working Monday during:

Winter Cohort: January – March
Summer Cohort: May – July
Fall Cohort: September – November

The Roles We Train For

Virtual Scientific Advisor

Role:

Provide valuable insights and guidance to help the next generation of biomedical startups innovate their tech, navigate Federal opportunities and requirements, and move from lab to market with speed and success. Interact directly with clients, DoD personnel, researchers, and other components of project teams. Collaborate with other Advisors and Research Specialists as part of one or more Virtual Scientific Advisory Teams. 

Training:

Level I Foundations Course (required). Level II Intermediate & Level III Advanced Courses will be made available in the future.

Qualifications: 

  • Military affiliation (Active Duty, Veteran, Military Spouse, National Guard, or Reserve).
  • Biomedically trained or experienced in clinical medicine, operational medicine, health, wellness, life science, public health, nursing, or biomedical engineering. 
  • Suggested: Completed or currently pursuing graduate level education.

Skill Sets:

Skilled in verbal & written communication, technology scouting/ assessment, project management, analytical and associational thinking, collaboration development.

Virtual Research Specialist

Role:

Collaborate with other Researcher Specialists and Scientific Advisors as part of one or more Virtual Scientific Advisory Teams. Perform literature searches and reviews to support or dispute research hypotheses; Write, draft, and review research proposals, white papers, and other documents as needed; Identify and curate funding and collaborative research opportunities to build company-specific strategic roadmaps; and Capture best practices, lessons learned, and measurable outcomes.

Training:

Level I Foundations Course (required). Level II Intermediate Course is currently in development; Level III Advanced Course will be made available in the future.

Qualifications: 

  • Military affiliation (Active Duty, Veteran, Military Spouse, National Guard, or Reserve)
  • Experience or background in clinical medicine, operational medicine, health, wellness, life science, public health, nursing, or biomedical engineering. 
  • Suggested: Completed or currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate level education.

Skill Sets:

Strong verbal & written communication, analytical thinking, project management, detail-oriented.

Virtual Project Manager

Role:

Support the research and projects of Scientific Advisors and Research Specialists as part of one or more Virtual Scientific Advisory Teams. Collect, analyze, and compile information in support of biomedical research. Assist in project management and in reviewing research proposals, grants, and other documents as needed.

Training:

Level I Foundations Course (required). Grant Management Specialist or Project Management (optional).

Qualifications: 

  • Military affiliation (Active Duty, Veteran, Military Spouse, National Guard, or Reserve)
  • Interest in and ability to learn about clinical medicine, operational medicine, health, wellness, life science, public health, nursing, or biomedical engineering industries. 
  • Suggested: Completed or currently pursuing Associate or undergraduate level education.

Strong verbal & written communication, an intuitive mindset, team player.
